As a community for parents and babies from all walks of life we would like to also support one of the most vulnerable groups in our society - orphaned and abandoned children with life-limiting conditions. Our Cape Baby directory has chosen to support an amazing charity, Butterfly Palliative Home by donating R50 of every directory listing fee to them!
BUTTERFLY PALLIATIVE HOME
Caring for Orphaned and Abandoned Infants with Palliative Needs
Butterfly Palliative Home is a small foster care home in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, which provides end-of-life care to babies and toddlers with severe disabilities and life-limiting conditions. The dedicated team of volunteers includes medical doctors, therapists, social workers, pastors and educational and developmental specialists and a wonderful team of caregivers, who are mostly widows from the local community.
The babies come from all over South Africa and the team personally travels to fetch each child before bringing them back to their new home. Some of the babies were found dumped in bushes, toilets, abandoned in hospitals or left to starve at home. Apart from their chronic special medical needs, most have endured severe neglect, starvation and abuse. Some of the children will only spend a short time in the Butterfly Home before they pass on, but they spend their final days in a place of safety and love. With other babies, the nurturing environment allows them to flourish emotionally and physically and they actually live much longer than expected. For some they even try to find loving permanent families.
